Amazon Fresh on en parle?

Après une semaine d’approvisionnement à la petite supérette locale il était temps de se lancer dans une commande en ligne. La supérette est vraiment chouette mais bon tu sais transporter les trucs ce n’est justement pas trop mon truc.

Depuis déjà plusieurs mois à Londres il me démangeait d’essayer Amazon Fresh mais le choix quelque peu limité m’avait toujours fait hésiter. Nous voilà aux États-Unis, le royaume du grand Amazon donc il était temps de tester.

Si tu aimes la pizza et le coca tu seras bon sinon passes ton chemin (ok, j’abuse un peu mais le choix ne fait pas rêver si tu aimes cuisiner) .

Outre le choix assez décevant et les créneaux horaires de deux heures (une habitude à prendre car les Etats-Unis ce n’est pas l’Europe et la plupart des délais de livraison sont plus importants), mon plus gros problème arrive à la livraison et c’est la raison pour laquelle je voulais écrire quelques lignes.

Livré dans des sacs en papier j’étais agréablement surprise, t’en fait pas la bonne surprise à vite disparue, ensuite se fut le désastre du suremballage. L’emballage, dans l’emballage, dans l’emballage et un dernier emballage au cas où les 3 autres aient un problème. Donc un grand sac papier que tu ouvres puis un carton posé à l’intérieur pour la solidité du sac papier puis un emballage isotherme ou des sachets plastiques selon les aliments puis pleins de petites bouteilles en plastiques congelées et enfin des sacs de neige carbonique - eux aussi emballés dans du plastique le tout enfermé dans des boîtes en carton. Une montagne d’emballages.

Dans tout ça tu te dis que peut être que tout était bien emballé et préservé. Malheureux, loin de là, les bananes étaient congelées à cause de la neige carbonique et la soupe explosée. Autant te dire qu’on peut faire mieux.

Amazon Fresh première et dernière fois. Certains pourraient dire que les sacs en papier et le carton c’est recyclable; recycler c’est bien mais consommer moins c’est encore mieux. Un yaourt n’a jamais eu besoin d’un quadruple emballage pour arriver à bon port. Oui tout ça me mets un peu en colère.

Je serais curieuse de savoir si c’est le même gâchis d’emballages dans tous les pays où le service existe.

Amazon Fresh, shall we talk about it?

We’ve been here one week and even if the local supermarket is awesome (a mix of its English counterparts Marks & Spencer and Waitrose) it was time to experiment with online groceries.

For several months I’ve wanted to try Amazon Fresh in London but was always disappointed by the lack of choice; severely reduced compared to any other online grocery store. Now we’re in the US - homeland of Amazon - I thought it was the ideal time to test Amazon Fresh.

First things first, the selection of groceries available - really poor. If you like pizza and coke, fine, otherwise forget about it (OK - perhaps I’m guilty of a little bit of hyperbole here).

Secondly, I was really surprised by the two-hour slot, though I guess a two-hour window is pretty common in America.  Delivery time/timeslots generally aren’t as fast or precise compared to England.  Something I’ll have to get used to.  Fine, let’s consider this as ok. The point that really caused me an issue is the packaging and this is why I wanted to write some words.

Delivered in paper bags, I was initially impressed, though that didn’t last very long. Once I began to open the bags the environmental disaster started to unfurl itself.  Bags in bags, in bags, and again some more bags (just in case the other 3 bags had a problem).  Each paper bag had a cardboard shell inside to maintain the shape, and then it has either a cooler bag or regular plastic bags. Inside these bags, there are frozen plastic bottles and dry ice – the dry ice itself is in plastic cases and in a cardboard envelope.

I couldn’t believe it! Being so well packed you could at least think the food is well preserved. Not at all. Our bananas were frozen, and the pot of soup was damaged. What precisely had all of this packaging (including the non-recyclable space-age cooling containers) gotten us?

Amazon Fresh, first and last time for me. You can recycle the bags and cardboard, but it would have been better not to use it in the first place. I don’t think my pot of yogurt needs to be quadruply packed in order to reach our fridge (perhaps they thought we were going to launch the bags to the international space station, and had packed them for an extended voyage?).  It makes me sad and upset.

I would be curious to know if this is specific to the US or if it is the same everywhere Amazon Fresh exists.
